Little Deer is a new cottage area on the untamed western shores of Lake Winnipeg. Three identical summer cabins were simultaneously constructed, (followed by a fourth Red cabin, and preceded by a Summer Office) capitalizing on the prefab efficiency of assembling Quonset structures. The kit of parts arrived at the site stacked like potato chips ready to be quickly bolted together. A pair of aluminum clad rectangles are tagged onto the main open vaulted structure. A long linear screened room spans the lake-fronting elevation, terminating with an independent enclosed sleeping porch. The washroom cube at the back features a galvanized livestock watering trough, repurposed for bathing, its translucent curtain filtering light from the fully glazed end wall facing the dense forest. Curtains are also employed as dividing walls in the bedrooms tucked under the open loft. Rough sawn timbers from a local mill, salvaged sheet aluminum cladding, and salvaged T&G flooring compose the simple, exposed, unfinished palette. The spruce timbers are gently refined, with the rough edges removed and the addition of a protective latex coating, to create the robust dining table, bed frames, and even the kitchen and washroom countertops.
