Assiniboine
Competition entry for a temporary installation to act as a gateway to Assiniboine Park via the existing footbridge. An arcade of heavy timber posts, cut from salvaged trees that have succumbed to Dutch Elm disease, is topped with a stretched stainless-steel wire mesh canopy covered with flowering vines to provide a shady respite to enjoy an ice cream or coffee. Each night as dusk falls the entire installation would be magically transformed into a glowing passageway, illuminated by glow-in-the-dark pigments - an ethereal green for the posts, with a splash of hot pink on the benches. An annual 240-foot-long tea party, enchanting under the soft sheltering glow, is just one of the myriad of activities, performances, happenings and moments envisioned, both planned and spontaneous.
