Rossman is small lake in a delightfully surprising, very hilly zone in western Manitoba, southwest of Riding Mountain National Park. The site is a mix of farmland, forest, marsh and bog – but is not directly adjacent to the lake, which is a short walk away. The very compact, super-insulated new home is for a small family looking to escape from city living and create a new life with a greatly reduced resource demand. The house is perched at the top of one of the hills, looking south across the gently rolling terrain. A canopy of solar panel stretches across the south face of the roof, providing shade for windows below in the summer months, as well collecting the sun’s energy. A high efficiency wood-burning cookstove supplements the solar system while baking meals harvested from the land.
