Riding Mountain National Park, where the deer and the buffalo roam, was developed in the 1930’s as national site after existing less formerly as a small resort, mainly for locals, for many years. The Wasagaming townsite, for summer-use-only cottages, along with public infrastructure, were kickstarted at this time on the shores of Clear Lake. As part of the Canadian national park system, that included numerous mountainous resorts, it adopted a rustic building tradition using local timber and stone, and featuring distinctively expressive rooflines. New cottages, along with the much more elaborate public buildings, were subject to design guidelines and reviews that have resulted in a rich built heritage. This cottage looks to honour – but not clone - the early rustic charm that the town promoted and maintains, while amply accommodating the contemporary needs and desires of a large extended family.
